South African singer Jurie Els succeeded in a late night court bid on Wednesday to block a local media group from publishing a lead article linking him to controversial claims of sexual abuse. Els, who is married to South African high jump champion, Hestrie Cloete, fought to keep his name out of a You and Huisgenoot magazine article about an entertainment industry “uncle” who allegedly submitted young pop star Robbie Klay to years of sexual abuse. In the article, which was to be published in this week’s edition of the magazines, 21-year-old Klay publicly revealed, for the first time, the name of the man he claimed sexually abused him between the ages of 10 and 17. Granting Els’s application for an urgent interdict, high court Acting Judge Roland Sutherland, ordered Media24, owner of the two magazines, not to publish the story. In the article, which forms part of the court papers, Klay said he decided to speak out about the incidents to encourage other young people not keep their abuse a secret. Klay said if he ran into the “uncle”, who had been like a father to him, he would “break his neck”. Although prevented from publishing the name of the alleged molester, speculation about the content of the article and the identity of the “uncle” is spreading on a myriad of Internet websites, including popular networking site Facebook and Afrikaans gossip site bosparra.com. In terms of the interim order, Els has until February 27 to apply for a final interdict.
