Inside the MacBook Air

The MacBook Air has been dissassembled by the guys at ifixit. Ifixit report that it was a surpringingly pleasant task.

Some of the observations:

  • 19 screws to remove the battery. Replacing the battery is straightforward, but not something you'll be doing when your battery dies mid-flight.
  • There is a Silicon Image SIL1392CNU HDMI chip with a proprietory mini-DVI port. There is also HDCI circuitry on the motherboard.
  • The LED display panel is less than 3mm thick. Thanks to the LED display technology, there is no inverter board. A single cable provides the data and power to the display.
  • We're left with 88 screws and lots of parts. It's hard to believe everything here weighs in at only three pounds.
